PowerPointers
Don't forget these tips (courtesy of a UWB Campus Media Center workshop) for your next PowerPoint presentation:
1. If your presentation will be displayed with a projector, the best color choice is a blue background with yellow or white text.
2. If your presentation will be displayed on a TV monitor, your best bet is to use a light background with dark text, and no gradients.
3. Do not use more than three text-only slides in a row, or your audience's eyes will start to glaze over.
4. For bulleted text, the program assumes you will use 5-6 bullets of 5-6 words each, in text no larger than a 22-point font.
5. ALWAYS have a back-up plan, just in case your technology fails (imagine that!) and you're left without any images. While preparing your presentation, it's a good idea to type in your talking points under the "comment" section on each slide, and print out each one to refer to if needed. It's also a good idea to take a hard copy of your presentation with you in case you want/need to make handouts.
6. A PowerPoint presentation often is meant to be reinforcing background for a speaker, not the main event. If this is true in your case, remember to talk to and look at your audience, not at the screen.
7. The program gives you lots of whiz-bang doodads to spice up your presentation, but they're just like chili pepper: a little bit goes a long way. Don't overpower your message by adding too much visual clutter.
