Organize your sources of information!

What are RSS feeds, and why do I want them?

  • RSS feeds are headlines sent directly to you, from any news source and from many web pages
  • Clicking on the title takes you directly to the article, blog or podcast
  • If your favorite site has the orange rectangular box or the letters RSS (or sometimes XML), this means it has an RSS feed
  • Think of RSS as 'Really Simple Syndications' or 'Really Simple Subscriptions'

iGoogle

  • Organize the web-based information you want in one spot
  • Can be used as a start page
  • Can be accessed from any computer via your Google account
  • Organize info by tabs, and you can add multiple tabs
  • Google will put modules on the page for you, or you can add your own
  • Can add RSS feeds, organized by content in your tabs (see Education RSS Feeds page, for example)
  • Many handy Google Gadgets can be added- a calendar, to do list, the weather, traffic maps, quotes of the day, cheap gas, etc.
  • Can share and access personal Outlook Calendar
  • Can link Mail, Facebook/MySpace, Skype, YouTube, IM and chats, etc.
  • Very easy to set up with click and drag editing, Add Content button (to go get your personal RSS feeds) and by searching the Gadgets.
  • Click on the link above, or from the Google home page click on iGoogle, and get started!

 Netvibes

  • Very similar to iGoogle, but will not find modules for you in new tabs

  • Module size can be edited
  • Widget (Gadget) choice is different
  • By scrolling mouse over RSS feed headlines, a box pops up with a brief synopsis of the article

At del.icio.us organize your bookmarks by applying electronic tags

  • Can search by tag
  • Bookmarks can be marked with multiple tags, so will pop up in any related search
  • Bookmarks can be added or used from any computer by logging in to your account
  • Can search other people's bookmarks by tag to find related sites they like (see Social Networking page)
  • Most tagged sites come up first, so you get the most popular sites in your search
  • Easy to set up: click on the link above and follow the directions
